Joppa Elementary School
LIBRARY MISSION STATEMENT
The primary focus of the Joppa Elementary
School Media Center is to implement, enrich, and support the educational
objectives of the school it serves. The center will
provide a wide range of materials on various levels of difficulty, diverse
viewpoints, and a wide array of cultural entities. The
school library media center will also provide additional materials to
attract students to reading, viewing, and listening as sources of pleasure
and recreation over and above needed subject content.

LIBRARY OBJECTIVES
¦
To provide materials which support and enhance the school curriculum, while
taking into consideration the various interests and abilities of the
students served.

To organize the collection so patrons can find information quickly and use
the facility efficiently.
¦
To provide materials representative of religious, ethnic, and cultural
groups as well as their contribution to American heritage.
¦
To provide materials that will stimulate growth in factual knowledge,
literacy appreciation, aesthetic values, and ethical standards.
¦
To promote reading as a lifelong skill.
¦
To provide leadership and assistance in the use of instructional technology.
¦
To work closely with school faculty to enhance and support the curriculum.
 
STAFF
Mrs. Jennifer Gowan
is the library media specialist at Joppa Elementary School. Mrs. Gowan
earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Tennessee State
University in Johnson City, Tennessee. Mrs. Gowan enjoys singing, reading,
and watching movies. She has two sons, Robbie and Will.

Accelerated Reader:
The students at
Joppa Elementary School participate in the
Accelerated
Reader Program. Through this program, children read
material selected for their particular reading level. After completing the
selection, the student will complete a short comprehension
quiz. Student receive awards for their accomplishments.
Book Fairs: Once a school
year, the school library media center participates in a school wide book
fair. The school library media center utilizes funds
from book fairs to purchase print and non-print materials. Book fairs are
provided though
Scholastic Book Fairs.
Bring Em’ In:
As the school year comes to an
end the library media center strives to motivate students to return all
checked out material. Each student that
turns in checked out material receives a ticket. Several tickets are drawn
at the end of the school year and winner receive a free summer
reading book, game, or candy.
